Boys Soccer
On February 7, the Newman boys (13-3-2), the #5 seed in the Division IV playoffs, played a second round game on VSN here against the 21st seed, Pope John Paul II Catholic School (7-10-4). Though the Greenies were the higher seed, the LHSAA’s travel equity rule for second round games mandated the match be played at Jaguar Field in Slidell.
In the first half, Newman dominated possession and looked dangerous, but the game was frustratingly scoreless through the first 36 minutes. In the 37th minute, however, the Greenies’ right back Rowan Dravid worked the ball into center midfielder Paul Richard, who drove a shot into the grass that looked headed to the goalkeeper. Fortunately, left wing Rylan Claverie was able to race in, beat the Jaguars goalkeeper and pop the ball into the far net for the 1-0 lead. In the second half, the boys continued to attack, just missing paydirt, including a would-be-finish that somehow bounced just off the goal line and glanced off and over the crossbar. Doubling down, a header by Claverie off the subsequent goal kick went to Boyce Batten, whose long shot from distance was blocked by the keeper. As he’s done all season, Claverie out hustled the defenders to the ball and drove it into the back of the net for his second goal of the night. For the remainder of the game, the Newman boys continued to be in control and ultimately earned the 2-0 victory to advance to the quarterfinals.
On Endymion Saturday, the boys traveled to LaPlace for a blustery quarterfinal match against the #4 seed, St. Charles Catholic High School, and covered by NOLA.com here. Paul Richard led off the scoring in the fifth minute with a strong strike into an open net after the Comets goalkeeper came off his line to deal with an attack by Claverie. In the 15th minute, George Villere’s steal and cross was tapped in by Claverie to give the Greenies a two-goal lead. St. Charles Catholic got back in the game with some nice passing combinations and an outside footer goal, but Claverie quickly responded with a finish off a cross from the right wing by Batten. A long through ball to Villere from Batten just before halftime was again delivered to Claverie, who once more beat the keeper to increase the lead to 4-1.
In the second half, now with the wind at their back, the Greenies made it 5-1 with a shot by Villere in front of goal. A successful St. Charles Catholic penalty kick after a questionable handball call gave the Comets a lifeline, but a violent foul by a frustrated Comet defender in the 56th minute resulted in a red card that silenced the home team and effectively ended their season. Down to 10 men, the Comets conceded yet another goal from Claverie, a punch in by junior Jack Hance, and a second goal from Villere to accompany his two assists. For his extraordinary four-goal effort in the 8-2 victory, Claverie was nominated by NOLA.com as a candidate for boys high school athlete of the week.
With the huge win, the boys now advance to the semifinals at home on Saturday (2/17) at 6:30pm, on VSN, against Episcopal School of Baton Rouge (#8 seed). This contest will be a rematch of last year’s exciting 5-4 game that sent Episcopal to the finals. For LHSAA playoff games, all attendees must purchase tickets here. Please spread the word with friends, family and students to come out and fill the stands to support the boys! Glow necklaces, cowbells and foam fingers will be provided while supplies last. The winner will advance to the Division IV finals in Hammond on February 21.
Girls Soccer
Back on February 6, the Newman girls (13-4-2) hosted a second round Division IV playoff matchup on VSN here against Calvary Baptist Academy (10-6-1), the 14th seed from Shreveport. At the outset, the visitors held off the Greenies’ attack the best they could, with the Cavaliers keeper recording 12 early saves. In the 17th minute, though, a Genevieve Plaisance corner kick was punched in on the far post by Avery Summerour for the opening goal. In the 31st minute, Brooke Montano stole the ball at midfield, carried it down the field and dropped it off to Hannah Plaisance, whose shot from 25 yards out made it 2-0. A minute later, Lili Arjmand added another heater, and in the 36th minute, H. Plaisance tapped in a cross from Montano for the Greenies’ fourth goal. Shortly after halftime, some crisp passing in possession found an open Arjmand, whose shot from the top of the area made it 5-0. From there, the Greenies reserves entered the game and played well to maintain the clean sheet and advance to the quarterfinals. For her outstanding performance, H. Plaisance was named by NOLA.com here as a candidate for the New Orleans area girls high school athlete of the week.
On Lundi Gras (2/12), the Newman girls (#3 seed), played their quarterfinal matchup at home on VSN here and covered by NOLA.com here against Hammond’s St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic School (#11 seed). With a record of 10-7 in the regular season, the Falcons had won their two earlier playoff games by wide margins, including an 8-0 upset in the second round against the #6 seed, Westminster Christian. In the 16th minute, a heavy touch by a Cavalier defender bounced to Brooke Montano who banged in her seventh goal of the year. In the 21st minute, a throw-in by defender Mary Catherine Flower led to a turn and long-range shot by Hannah Plaisance. The effort was saved nicely by the diving keeper, but left winger Kingsland LeBourgeois was there to bury the rebound. In the 30th minute, the Falcons clawed one back with a corner kick that was batted into the air and then headed and chipped in by St. Thomas Aquinas, but H. Plaisance restored the two-goal cushion after a nice run through traffic and cross by Sydney Gallagher. In the second half, Lili Arjmand added her 14th and 15th goals of the season, with assists from Montano and LeBourgeois, respectively. The Greenies reserves again came on to complete the game, with the final score of 5-1.
On Saturday at 4pm, the Newman girls will travel to Shreveport for a semi-final showdown against the #2 seed, Loyola College Preparatory High School. The match is expected to be live streamed on YouTube via LCP TV here. The winner will advance to the Division IV finals in Hammond on February 21.
