The Greenies are District Champions!
The girls basketball team dominated at the district championship tournament last week hosted by Metairie Park Country Day School.

On Thursday (2/5), the Greenies more than doubled the score of St. Mary’s Academy, winning the semifinal game 66-32. The team had only five turnovers and nearly 20 assists, evidence the victory over the Cougars was a true team effort.

On Friday, in the final game, the team defeated South Plaquemines High School 57-34, clinching the title of district champion for Newman’s second year in a row. Congratulations Greenies!
This week, the team started with a close game against St. Mary’s Dominican High School yesterday that, unfortunately, came up a little short. But the team is looking forward to a home game in the Palaestra tomorrow where the girls battle George Washington Carver High School at 5:30pm.

Greenies Respond With Strong Week, Winning Two of Three
The Newman Greenies boys basketball team continues to show its resilience and offensive firepower as they closed out a busy stretch by winning two out of three games, highlighted by two commanding victories.

On Tuesday, the Greenies came up short in a physical, high-energy game against Belle Chasse High School, falling 74-63. The boys stayed competitive throughout the contest, keeping pace with the Cardinals for long stretches. The game served as a reminder that even when the Greenies aren’t at their sharpest, they still have the scoring power and toughness to hang with strong opponents.
On Thursday, the boys responded with one of their most complete performances of the season, rolling past Maurepas High School 76-50. From the opening tip, the Greenies controlled the tempo, pushed the ball in transition, and attacked the basket with confidence. Newman’s defensive pressure forced turnovers and created easy scoring chances, allowing them to build a lead early and extend it throughout the game.
Then on Saturday, the Greenies continued their momentum with another impressive win, defeating St. John School 76-47 in a game where Newman again proved it can score in bunches while keeping opponents in check. Newman’s balanced attack made it difficult for the Eagles to key in on any one player, and the Greenies played with a steady focus from start to finish. Their defense remained disciplined, limiting open looks and forcing St. John into tough possessions. By the final buzzer, Newman had earned its second straight blowout win and another confidence boost heading into the next stretch of the season.
Next up, the boys will play on the road today against Covington High School at 6pm. On Thursday, they will play away at New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School, and then conclude the regular season at home against Covenant Christian Academy on Monday at 1pm.

Girls Soccer
As Mardi Gras parades began rolling down St. Charles Avenue, the girls soccer team (9-7-3) rolled past North Caddo High School (7-7-1) on Friday night at home in the first round of the playoffs, ending the match just after halftime under the eight-goal mercy rule.
CC Loerzel opened the scoring against the Titans from Vivian, Louisiana just four minutes in, followed by a quick second goal finished by Brooke Montaño after a cross-field play from Susu Milling and a trap-and-tap assist from Lili Arjmand. Alyse Dulitz added the third goal, and then sent in a cross that Arjmand finished for the fourth score.
Katie Gershanik made it 5–0 before Arjmand converted a penalty kick with six minutes left in the first half. Then just before halftime, Reese Adler assisted Ann Schonberg from the corner for the seventh goal on a strong header.

In the second half, Dulitz capped the scoring with her second goal of the match, triggering the mercy rule and sealing the 8–0 playoff victory for the Greenies.
Tomorrow (2/11), the girls will host a second round playoff game in a rematch against Northlake Christian School (10-6-3), the #11 seed. Kickoff is at 7pm, following the boys playoff game. Tickets, which are required for all attendees, can be purchased here.
Boys Soccer
On Wednesday, the boys soccer team (10-3-4) kicked off the first round of the playoffs as the #1 seed in Division IV against the #32 seed, Ferriday’s Delta Charter School (6-17-2), at home on VSN here. In just the second minute, Ford Summerour’s strong shot off a pass from left winger Oliver Garrett gave the Greenies the lead. In the 17th minute, team assist leader Veer Walia fed team goal scoring leader Reed Sanford for the former’s first of three assists and the latter’s first of two goals on the night. One minute later, Garrett crashed the area after a diving save from the Storm keeper and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Garrett would score again in the 30th minute and finish the night with two goals and an assist. Senior Daniel Taylor added two goals of his own, and Walia, Joe Morris, and Thomas Gershanik also had scores, including a goal off a beautiful cross from fellow senior Chase Hoffman. With 10-0 score at halftime, the game was ended early per the maximum goal differential rule.
Tomorrow (2/11), the boys will host a second round playoff game against Rapides High School (9-9-0), the #16 seed. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30pm, and the girls game will follow at 7pm. Tickets, which are required for all attendees, can be purchased here.
Baseball
The baseball team enters the season with a strong returning core, experienced senior leadership, and an offseason emphasis on strength training, pitching development, and defensive fundamentals. The coaches expect early strengths to include defense, pitching depth, and situational hitting as Newman begins a competitive schedule.
The senior class is expected to set the tone and includes Jack Falgoust, one of the staff’s top pitching arms a versatile infielder; Collier Villere, a second-year starting shortstop who also serves as a lockdown closing pitcher; George Loop, a speedy center fielder and projected leadoff hitter; Henry Haber, a pitcher widely regarded by teammates as one of the program’s hardest workers and expected to be a key contributor this season; Christian Sauska, the team’s big-game ace on the mound and named as a New Orleans area pitcher to watch here; and Charles Wilson, a four-year starting catcher who provides consistent leadership behind the plate, featured as a New Orleans area Position Players to Watch by NOLA.com here,

Falgoust set the tone on the mound with five strong innings and 10 strikeouts, while Villere added two scoreless innings in relief. At the plate, Wilson led Newman in hitting, going 2-for-3, and Villere drove in four runs. More statistics can be found on the baseball team’s X account here.

Indoor Track and Field
Greenies Make Their Mark at LSU Last Chance Qualifier
The indoor track and field team wrapped up the indoor regular season in impressive fashion at the LSU Last Chance High School Qualifier Meet on Saturday (2/7). Featuring many of Louisiana’s top athletes, the meet produced more than 1,200 elite performances as competitors chased qualifying marks for the championships on February 21.

The Newman athletes delivered when it mattered most. Logan DeGruy earned special recognition for selflessly pacing Michael Madigan to a personal record in the 3200m, with both athletes later returning to compete in the 4x400 relay at the end of a demanding day. Kai Oyemade continued his steady improvement in the 400m and is knocking on the door of breaking the one-minute mark as the outdoor season approaches. Lauren Kearney and Ann Kellogg each posted personal bests in the 400m before teaming up again in the 4x400 Relay, highlighting the squad's depth and teamwork. Jada Recasner showcased her heptathlete endurance by competing and qualifying for the state meet in all four of her events.
To qualify for the indoor state meet, athletes must rank in the Top 16 in the division in the 60m and 60m hurdles, while all other running and field events require a Top 12 division ranking. In addition, qualifying marks must be achieved at one of the four LHSAA-approved meets during the indoor season.
Following the Last Chance Meet, Newman has the following athletes tentatively qualified for the indoor state championships: Madelyn Argote (400m), Remi Cousin (60m hurdles), Jada Recasner (60m hurdles, 60m dash, long jump, triple jump), Logan DeGruy (800m, 1600m), Louis Barnett (pole vault), and Dylan Kolenovsky (shot put). Relay teams earning qualification include the Girls’ 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800, along with the Boys’ 4x800. Final rankings can be found at here
Lacrosse
The lacrosse team made the trip to Baton Rouge last week and squared off with a tough Catholic High School squad in a spirited practice scrimmage. The Greenies brought the energy, battled all over the field, and held their own from start to finish. The team will be back in action soon! | ![]() |
