Boys Soccer

The undefeated boys soccer team continued its winning ways over the weekend, with a 2-0 home victory on VSN here over Division I’s Dutchtown High School. In the 15th minute, sophomore Reed Sanford fielded a long pass from right back Jackson Fitzpatrick and was able to create space and fire off a right-footed shot past the Griffins goalkeeper for his eighth goal of the season. Right before halftime, the Greenies struck again, when Weston Beevers headed a long punt from goalkeeper Henry Houghton over to Sanford, who was able to outclass three Griffins defenders and slot another right-footer into the back of the net.

The Greenies defense preserved the clean sheet in the second half with especially strong play from the keeper Houghton and shutdown center backs Atticus Lafleur and Nick Coffin. With the 2-0 victory, Newman remains a perfect 4-0 with 20 goals scored and none allowed.

Tonight (12/9), the top-ranked Greenies will host division rival St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School (1-2-1) at 6pm, and then on Thursday (12/11) at 7pm, the boys will take on district opponent Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies (1-3-1). Both matches are at Michael Lupin Field.

Go Greenies!

Girls Soccer

The Newman girls came away with a 2–1 win over Mount Carmel Academy in a tightly fought matchup last night. Both defenses controlled the first half, with each side recording six shot attempts but failing to break through as the teams went into halftime tied 0–0. The momentum shifted 24 minutes into the second half when Newman capitalized on a foul well outside the penalty area, as goalkeeper Bizzie Guy pushed way up and buried the kick off the bottom of the crossbar for the first goal of the game.

Ten minutes later, Newman extended the lead as Lili Arjmand drove the ball downfield, pushed through contact with a defender, and finished the play to make it 2–0 with 21 minutes remaining. The Cubs converted a penalty kick in the final two minutes to tighten the score, but Newman held strong to secure the 2–1 victory.

With the win, the girls improved to 3-1 on the season. On Friday (12/12), they’ll head to Slidell to challenge Northshore High School, their third consecutive Division I opponent. Good luck, Greenies!

Girls Basketball

This week, the girls basketball team competed in the Newman Invitational Tournament (NIT). The team started strong with a victory over Benjamin Franklin High School on VSN here, winning 37 to 26. Piper Christian was dominating in her performance, scoring 20 points, including a fast break three-pointer.

Other Greenies to make baskets were Jordin Daniels, Sophia Mills, Kiyari Ivey, and Amari Jones.

The team’s next two games in the NIT were against traditionally strong opponents Archbishop Chapelle High School and Mount Carmel Academy, and unfortunately, the team was unable to emerge victorious in those games, despite the scoring efforts of Christian, Daniels, Jessica Taranto, Mills, Jones, Ivey, Breigha Leal, and Brooke Westley.

Many of the girls’ parents volunteered their time and made numerous contributions over the past week, making the NIT a success, and maintaining the tournament’s well-earned reputation as one of the best of the season.

This week is the team’s final week of games before exams. Today, the team plays Academy of Our Lady High School from Marrero in a 5:30pm game in the Palaestra, on VSN here. On Thursday (12/11), the team plays Louise S. McGehee School, also at 5:30pm in the Palaestra. Go Greenies!

Greenies Show Grit in Newman Invitational, Secure Strong Win Despite Missing Podium

The Newman Greenies may not have placed in this year’s Newman Invitational Tournament, but their performance still delivered bright moments that showcased resilience, teamwork, and star-level individual play.

One of the standouts for the Greenies was junior guard CJ Encalarde, who led the way with an impressive 19 points, setting the tone offensively and keeping the Greenies competitive throughout their matchups. His ability to attack the rim, knock down shots, and create opportunities energized the team and the home crowd.

Despite falling short of a top finish in the tournament, the Greenies responded with focus and unity, most notably in their strong victory over Benton High School from Shreveport. In that matchup, Newman’s ball movement, defensive communication, and composure under pressure all came together as the Greenies played some of their best team basketball of the week.

With the Invitational behind them, the Greenies are locked in on what’s next. They’ll return to Palaestra tomorrow at 6pm to take on Patterson High School, and the team is determined to keep building on their progress. While a podium finish slipped away this year, the Greenies left the tournament with momentum, confidence, and the clear sense they are growing stronger with every game.
