Girls Basketball

The 1st annual girls Newman Invitational Tournament (NIT) started off Thursday, November 30th with the Newman girls playing a first round game vs McGehee. This game was dominated by our seniors. Anaya Yanusa led the way with 28 points. Talia Parnes was very consistent with her shot and had 9. Maddie Hebert scored 7 and played great defense. Our senior leadership led us to a 38-13 halftime lead. The second half scoring was led by Madison Williams with 8. Jessica Taranto, Amari Jones, and Camille McCann all scored in the second half and kept the Greenies in the lead. The final score was 64-32.

On Friday, December 1st, the Greenie Girls played a second round game against Mount Carmel, who took an early lead scoring the first eight points of the contest. Then, Maddie Herbert scored to get Newman on the board. Newman finally tied up the game 10-10 as the second quarter started thanks to a 3-point shot by Madison Williams. Newman again tied the game at 16-16 when Anaya Yunusah made both of her foul shots, and then she scored again to make the score 18-16, the first time that Newman would take the lead in the game. The Greenies held that lead for the rest of the second quarter and all of the third quarter, with dominating plays such as another 3-pointer by Madison Williams that at times had Newman in the lead by 10 points. Mount Carmel closed the gap in the Fourth Quarter with Newman leading by only a few points, but with about three minutes left in the game, skillful passes and successful rebounds of Talia Parnes, Camille McCann, Anaya Yanusah, Madison Williams, and Maddie Herbert ate up the clock to the 30 second mark. Two more baskets by Anaya Yanusah made the final score was 41-33 and gave the Greenies the right to advance to the championship game against Chalmette.

The NIT championship game led off with great team scoring as Talia Parnes, Jessica Taranto and Anaya Yanusah all scored in the first quarter. The defense was able to hold Chalmette to 10 pts. At the end of the quarter the Greenies had a lead of 12-10. But Chalmette dominated the second quarter and took a 33-17 halftime lead.

In the second half the Greenies fought back with scoring by Yanusah and Madison Williams but Chalmette proved to be the first champion of the NIT. Coach Blackerby said “I would like to have won our first NIT. I thought the girls played hard and never gave up and for that I am proud.”

Yanusah and Williams were named to the All Tournament Team. Congratulations to both of them.

This week we have our next game tomorrow, Wednesday 6th of December at Chapelle at 6 pm. We also have a game Friday 8th of December at Newman at 6:30 pm vs Slidell. We hope you will join us at the Palaestra.

Football

The Football Greenies’ season ended with a heartbreaking 27-35 Semifinal playoff loss to the Calvary Baptist Academy Cavaliers in Shreveport, Louisiana last Friday. The boys fought until the final whistle, but unfortunately came up just one score short against a strong Calvary team.

The Newman Defense was outstanding, forcing the Cavaliers to punt 4 times and turn the ball over on downs once, while holding Calvary 12 points below their season average of 47 points per game. Senior Outside Linebacker and Team Captain William Darragh had his best night of the year, harassing the Cavalier offense with 10 tackles, a sack and a tackle for a loss. Junior Defensive Tackle Justin Wells had 5 tackles, a sack and a tackle for a loss. And, the heart & soul of the 2023 Newman squad, Senior Middle Linebacker Bobby Kerrigan, led the Greenies with 11 tackles.

As has been the case all year, Senior WR Peter Loop set the pace for the Newman offense with three receptions for 61 yards and two touchdowns, adding to his team leading total of 11 TDs on the season. Senior Tight End Will Loerzel had an incredible one-handed touchdown reception, Sophomore Running Back Jake Randle had over 100 yards rushing, and two-way star D.J. Thomas also had a TD reception.

Junior Quarterback Eli Friend delivered the 4 TD passes, raising his total to 25 passing touchdowns on the season, and is once again up for Fox 8 Football Friday Player of the Week. Please cast your vote for Friend, in recognition of his remarkable season as Newman’s starting Quarterback, by clicking here. Voting closes at the end of the day on Wednesday.

While this year’s Greenies came up just short of being the first Newman team to make it to the State Championship game in the Superdome, they will long be remembered for their selfless team play, grit and determination in posting 10 wins against a very challenging schedule, with just two losses coming against Calvary and St. Charles, who will meet in the Division III Select Finals on Saturday.

Many thanks to Coach Stewart, Coach Nothnagel, Coach Mathews, Coach Victory, Coach Wenzel, Coach Milton, Coach Philibert, and Coach Henshaw for another terrific season of Newman football.

Boys Soccer

The Newman soccer boys (3-0) cruised to their third victory of the season last week against district opponent Fisher Middle-High School.  Defender Will Pinkerton led off the scoring with a point-blank header after making his way forward for a corner kick that bounced off the Gator keeper’s hands.  By the middle of the first half, it was 4-0 Greenies, with goals from George Villere, Boyce Batten and Rylan Claverie.  In the 28th minute, the Greenies allowed their first goal of the season, but Claverie quickly countered with a left-footed punch on a break and Villere capitalized on another corner kick miscue by the Gators to finish the half at 6-1 Greenies.  After halftime, it was all Newman, with Paul Richard, Claverie and Batten adding goals to make it 9-1 and reach the maximum goal differential.

The boys have a busy week ahead before taking a break for exams.  On Tuesday (12/5), the JV squad will play its first match of the season with an away game against Jesuit, and the varsity boys will play in Slidell against Northshore High School at 7pm.  On Wednesday (12/6), the JV boys will host Holy Cross at 7pm, and on Thursday (12/7), the varsity boys will play a district match at home at 5:45pm against Jefferson RISE Charter School.  Then on Saturday (12/9), the varsity boys will host a double header with the girls, against Northlake Christian (D-4) at 3pm on VSN.

Girls Soccer

The Newman varsity soccer girls improved their record to 4-0 last week with two more clean sheets.  On Tuesday, the girls traveled north for a wintry varsity/JV doubleheader in Covington against Archbishop Hannan High School (D-3) (2-2-1).  In the varsity match, the Hawks controlled the tempo throughout much of the game, but strong defensive play by center backs Sydney Gallagher and Claire Charpentier and critical saves and clearances by goalkeepers CeCe Pinkerton and Bizzie Guy kept the Greenies in the match.  By the second half, the Newman girls had regained their footing and were able to make quality runs into the Hawks’ defensive third.  In the 63rd minute, Kingsland LeBourgeois worked the ball up the right touchline to Avery Summerour, who managed to launch a cross between her two defenders.  Center midfielder Hannah Plaisance settled the pass around the top right side of the penalty area, created space and fired a shot back over the goalkeeper’s outstretched arms into the bottom corner for the game winner.  The Greenies would hold on for a hard-fought 1-0 win.

In the JV match that followed, the Newman girls faced an Archbishop Hannan side that, like their varsity counterparts, controlled the ball well and moved about the pitch with pace.  In the 15th minute, however, the Hawks keeper received a back pass and was unable to properly clear it due to heavy pressure from striker Lily Elichman.  Left winger Catherine Johnson capitalized on the errant pass and drove the ball back into the net to give the JV Greenies a 1-0 lead.  Unfortunately, the Hawks answered with an equalizer before halftime and two more goals in the second half to give the home team a 3-1 win and the Newman girls program their first loss of the season.

On Wednesday, the varsity girls returned home to host district opponent Fisher Middle-High School (1-1).  In a much different match than the night before, the Greenies overwhelmed the Gators with eight unanswered goals and nearly 100 percent possession in the first and only half.  Lili Arjmand (3), Sarah Gibbs Smallpage (2), Catherine Lapeyre (2), and Kingsland LeBourgeois all registered scores for the Greenies in the 8-0 win.

This Tuesday (12/5), the varsity girls travel to Slidell for a double header with the boys against Northshore High School (D-1).  On Thursday (12/7), the JV girls will play at home against the Northshore High School JV girls at 7pm.  Then on Saturday (12/9), the varsity girls will host another double header with the boys, against Northlake Christian (D-4), starting at 1pm on VSN.
