Greenies Back on the Winning Track with 71–57 Victory Over Lycée Français
![]() | The boys basketball team found their rhythm again Friday night, returning to the win column with a convincing 71–57 victory over Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans. It was a complete team effort that showcased Newman’s resilience, poise, and ability to respond after adversity, exactly the kind of performance that can reset momentum as the calendar turns toward the heart of the season. From the opening tip against the Rougarou, the Greenies played with purpose, pushing the pace offensively while staying disciplined on the defensive end. |
Newman controlled the tempo, capitalized on scoring opportunities, and consistently made the extra pass, building separation as the game progressed. The Greenies’ defensive intensity forced tough shots and turnovers, allowing them to turn stops into points and maintain control down the stretch. The win boosts confidence and also sets the tone for a busy and important stretch of December basketball.
Newman now looks ahead to a pair of upcoming matchups before tournament play begins. The Greenies will face Jefferson RISE Charter School on Saturday (12/20) at 2pm, followed by a matchup against Chalmette High School on Monday (12/22) at 3:30pm. Both games provide valuable opportunities for Newman to continue building chemistry and sharpening execution.

To close out the month, the Greenies will head to the E.D. White High School Tournament beginning December 27, where they’ll test themselves against strong competition as they wrap up the calendar year and prepare for the challenges ahead.
With Friday night’s win as a spark, Newman appears locked in, focused, and ready to carry this momentum forward as they continue their push through the season.

On Thursday (12/11), the team defeated cross-town rival Louise S. McGehee School by the score of 61-30. This victory over the Hawks was achieved thanks to 17 points from Christian, 11 points from Jones, ten points from Daniels, 7 points from Aucoin, and additional baskets from Taranto, Brooke Westley, Kiyari Ivey, and Leal. The win was a great one because the girls worked especially well as a team during this game.
After exams finish, the Greenies play an away game at Lycée Français de la Nouvelle-Orléans this Friday (12/19) at 5pm. The next day, the Greenies have a Saturday (12/20) home game in the Palaestra against Benjamin Franklin High School at 10am.
Looking ahead, the Greenies will finish up the calendar year participating in the Gulf Shores High School All-Girls Christmas Basketball Tournament in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from December 27 to December 30. Have a great trip, girls!
Boys Soccer
The boys soccer team remains undefeated after cruising to two more shutouts last week. In Tuesday’s match against St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School on VSN here, right back Jackson Fitzpatrick was almost immediately brought down with a hard tackle on the edge of the penalty area. In his first minutes back from football, defender Will Pinkerton stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty kick. Three minutes later, Pinkerton scored again with a strong header off a perfect corner kick from Veer Walia.
Later in the first half, center back Atticus Lafleur followed suit with two more header goals from Walia’s corner kicks, making it 4-0 over the Falcons at halftime.

In the second half, Walia fielded a bump from midfielder Jai Bansal and powered a strong shot past the diving keeper, getting a goal for himself to go with his three assists. Thirteen minutes later, Bansal was tripped in the box, and although his ensuing penalty kick was saved by the keeper, he followed his shot and was able drive the rebound into the back of the net for Newman’s sixth and final goal of the evening.

On Thursday (12/11), the boys hosted district opponent Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies and were in control from start to finish. Hamilton Houghton led the way with a hat trick and Reed Sanford added a pair of goals in the second half to give him 11 on the season. Joe Morris, Roan Plymale, and Ford Summerour also added goals against the Jaguars, while Thomas Gershanik (2), Jackson Fitzpatrick, Veer Walia, and Daniel Taylor all had nice assists. The game was ended in the 70th minute when the score reached an 8-0 maximum goal differential.
With the win, the Greenies (6-0) have not allowed a goal this season, and dating back to prior years, have not lost a match in 30 straight contests. They are off for exams this week, but will be back at home on VSN against East Jefferson High School on Monday (12/22). Go Greenies!
Girls Soccer
On Friday evening, the soccer girls traveled to Slidell’s Northshore High School (6-2) for a competitive matchup against their third consecutive opponent from Division I, which is three levels higher. The Panthers struck early, scoring within the first three minutes to take a 1–0 lead. Newman responded with strong defensive play and continued pressure but went into halftime trailing by one. | ![]() Instagram: newmangirlssoccer |
In the second half, Sara Córdova dribbled the ball down to 30 yards out and fired a deep shot into the top right corner of the goal to even the score. Her score tied the game at 1–1, and despite continued efforts from both teams, the match ended in a draw.
Newman (3-1-1) will next face The Willow School (3-4-1) away on Friday (12/19) at 6pm, followed by Academy of the Sacred Heart at home on Tuesday, December 23 at 1pm. Both contests are sure to be exciting and competitive matches. Go Greenies!
