Cross Country

The Newman Cross Country team kicked off the season this past Friday at Audubon Park with our 3rd Annual Green & White Relays.

We are looking forward to our first meet at UNO this Friday, September 1 at 5:00 p.m.

Football

In its Jamboree last Friday, Newman rekindled its long-time rivalry with the St. Martin’s Saints. The two teams had not played each other since ‘98, and for Friday’s tilt StM came in loaded with 5 star running back Harlem Berry. The story of the night, however, was the Newman offensive line. Led by LSU commit, Brett Bordelon, and team captain, Heid Manning, with significant contributions from “Big B” Brandon Wilkins, Griffin Maxwell, Marcel Thionville and tight end Will Loerzel, Newman’s men in the trenches over-powered the Saints, creating massive holes that even the bacchagator could squeeze through. Sophomore sensation Jake Randle was the beneficiary of the stellar work up front. Randle out-shined the 5 star Saints back, rushing for 175 yards and two touchdowns against his mother’s alma mater. Will Loerzel was a force on both sides of the ball, adding a receiving touchdown and solid work on defense on top of his always terrific blocking. Quarterback Eli Friend chipped in with a running touchdown, while Peter Loop was breaking StM ankles on kick-off returns, setting the offense up with great field position contributing to two of Newman’s four scores. Senior placekicker Jacob Dusansky was perfect on the evening, making all 4 extra points.

Newman’s defense also did its part, holding Harlem Berry and the high-powered Saints offense under 100 total yards. The Greenie D was led by Felipe Suazo (2 sacks), Robert Kerrigan, Henry “Big Hen” Jackson, Isaiah Grant, and Justin Wells, who collectively lived in the Saints backfield all night long. Newman sealed the 28-14 victory with a late game interception by sophomore Jack Falgoust, as the Swamp erupted with chants of “Goose!”

The Varsity Greenies open the regular season at home this Friday night against Hahnville. The Newman JV will play its first game at home on Saturday at 10am against Brother Martin.

Swimming

The Newman Swim Team is gearing up for a great season that will, literally,  leave the competition in its wake.

Lead by captains, Emma Passler ('24) and Nick Reeza ('25), the 16 members of the Varsity Swim Team are ready for their second season competing in LHSAA Division III.

Coach Scott Robinson and Coach Alison Cransac have been leading the team through stroke work in the pool, high performance training,  and Dryland work.  The swimmers use fins and snorkels during daily practice.  But,  they will be tossing them aside for the annual Green & White Intrasquad Meet with the Newman Middle School Swim team on the afternoon of September 8th.   The journey from the Palestra pool to the State Meet in Sulphur, Louisiana has begun!

Volleyball

Record numbers turned out this year for the Greenie Volleyball teams.  The Coaches and Players have been hard at work for many weeks preparing for the upcoming season.  They started their season with the Chalmette Jamboree last week, where the coaching staff used this opportunity to vary the lineups and players positions.

The Varsity has 7 returning players from their 2022 State Championship Team, and welcomes several new players this season.  Working to fine tune this team and determine their best lineups, they took Jamboree losses to Country Day, Fontainebleau High School, and Mount Carmel Academy.

The JV started things off with an impressive Jamboree win over Country Day and another W against Pearl River High School, while coming up a bit short against Chalmette High School.

The Newman Volleyball program officially starts regular season play on Tuesday, August 29th at home in The Palestra against Booker T. Washington High School - JV Green at 4:30 and Varsity at 5:30.  Thursday JV White will travel to the Northshore to play in the Play Day at Fontainebleau Tournament.  Then to close the week, the Varsity team will travel to Assumption Parish on Thursday and Saturday for the Assumption High School Tournament.
