The Diamond Greenies’ roller coaster season of streaks continued with four games last week. Heading into the week, Newman had dropped 9 straight games, after starting the season with a 9 game win streak. Fortunately, the Greenies turned things around and won 4 in a row last week.
It started on Tuesday, April 2nd at Riverside Academy. Despite 4 ⅔ innings of steady delivery by Senior Pitcher Brendan Blackburn, who struck out 7 Rebel batters, the Greenies were down 2-3 heading into the 7th and final inning. Sophomore Jack Falgoust got the Greenie bats started, reaching base on an error. Senior Clayton “C-hawk” Stevens’ sacrifice bunt moved Falgoust to 2nd, and Peter Loop’s RBI single brought Falgoust home, knotting the game at 3. Jack Nesser then singled to right field, moving Loop from 1st to 3rd base, setting up Loop’s epic steal of home plate for the go ahead run. Sophomore sensation Charles Wilson heroically discarded his catcher’s gear to close out the Rebels on the mound, cementing the 4-3 Newman win.
On Thursday, April 4th, the Diamond Greenies got a big 15-3 win against 4A Warren Easton. The Greenie defense was led by Pitchers Tyler Zweifler (4 SO), Jack Falgoust (2 SO), and Peter Loop (2 SO). At the plate, Stevens was a monster, going 2-2 with 3 RBIs and 2 Runs. Loop and Zweifler also contributed a double apiece, while Jacob Dusansky, Nesser, and Falgoust combined for 7 RBIs.
The Greenie win streak continued on Friday against 4A Ben Franklin, with a big 20-1 Newman victory. Dusansky’s and Loop’s bats were on fire all week, and against Ben Franklin the pair went 3-3 and 2-2 respectively, with Loop’s two hits coming on a triple and his first homerun! Zweifler and Sophomore Collier Villere also managed two hits apiece. C-hawk Stevens was the winning pitcher, and Seniors Ethan Dulitz and Connors Palmer each contributed an inning in relief.
On Saturday, Greenie Nation flocked to the Avenger outfield for burgers and dogs, courtesy of grill-masters Sandy Villere and Big Peter Loop, and a highly anticipated match-up with the St. Martin’s Saints. Neither the BBQ nor the Diamond Greenies disappointed. Sophomore right-hander Charles Wilson was lights out on the bump, going 6 ⅔ innings with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk, while holding the Saints to only 1 run. Senior Peter Loop added another triple and slammed the door shut on the Saints in relief. Dusansky stayed hot in the box, adding another single, giving him 7 hits on the week.
With Saturday’s win, Newman moved to 13-10 on the season and currently sits at 9th in the LHSAA Select Division III power rankings. The Greenies will close out the regular season over the next 7 days with a big 2 game series against Country Day and home match-ups with Shaw and H.L. Bourgeois. Go Greenies!

Lacrosse
On Saturday evening, Newman lacrosse traveled to Hoss Memstas Stadium to take on the Brother Martin Crusaders. The Greenies found the back of the net quickly to start the contest, taking a commanding 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, the Crusaders were undeterred on their senior night and answered Newman’s initial charge by racking up 5 unanswered goals to tie the game 5-5 deep into the third quarter. Fortunately, the Greenies countered the Brother Martin surge, holding them to only one more goal and ultimately winning the game 12-6 when the final whistle blew.
Junior William Mahfouz and Max Kukuy, together with Senior Coalter McCall, led the Greenies in scoring with 3 goals each. Sophomores Price Demeyers and William Long combined for an additional 3 shots into the back of the cage (Demeyers – 2; Long – 1). Multiple additional players contributed to securing the ball and possessions on the ground, including Robert Kerrigan (2 ground balls), Brandon Favrot (2 ground balls), Jason Fitzpatrick (3 ground balls), Jake Lonseth (3 ground balls), George Pipes (3 ground balls), Patrick Landry (3 ground balls) and Corbett Parino (3 ground balls). Senior Goalie McCall “Get That Stuff Outa Here!” Engelhardt, stuffed Brother Martin on 17 of their 23 shots.
Newman Lacrosse will make its final push this week in its regular season, hosting D2 Shaw on Wednesday at 6:30 pm, and then welcoming St. Paul’s on Friday night for its Senior Night at 7 pm. All games will be at Lupin Field. Please come out and support the Greenies as they position themselves for a strong playoff push and a charge towards a potential state championship.
Softball
The Newman Varsity Softball team only played one game prior to the Spring Break and it was a battle. Country Day came into the contest with a very impressive 18-2 record and ranked #7 in the state power rankings. However, that didn’t matter as your Newman Greenies prevailed 11-10 in a thrilling 7-inning softball game as both teams competed for 2 1/2 hours at the JPRD Softball Complex.
Newman jumped out to a 10-3 lead after 2 innings - the bats were hot! Jesse Lambert (4-5, 4 RBI), Sydney Gallagher (3-4) and Felicity Drake (2-3) led the way offensively with 9 of Newman’s 12 hits. Jesse Lambert added her team leading 6th home run in the 2nd as Newman took control. Gallagher was equally dominate on the mound for the Greenies as she went 4 innings, striking out 5 Cajuns while throwing 134 pitches before handing the ball over to Sophomore Sydney Able to close it out. Able came in the 6th to record the final 6 outs of the contest as the Greenie Defense made some fantastic plays behind her.
After returning from Spring Break, the 10-3 Newman Varsity Softball Team took the field against St. Mary’s on Thursday, April 4 at JPRD. Newman easily defeated St. Mary’s 19-0 as Maryn Huber threw a 3 inning No-Hitter striking out 6 of the 11 batters she faced. Junior Center Fielder Sydney Gallagher led the way offensively with 2 hits and 3 RBI. Huber also helped herself out on the mound as she knocked in 3 runners with a great hit in the 2nd.
Friday’s game vs Crescent City at JPRD was more of the same as Newman defeated Crescent City 18-1 to improve their record to a very impressive 11-3 on the season. Sophomore Sydney Able pitched a complete game 1 hitter while striking out 5. Newman put on a hitting show as they collected 15 hits in 3-innings. Sydney Gallagher, Maddie Herbert and Maddox Bazley led the way with 3 hits each. Jesse Lambert, Brett Beasley and Madison Able each collected 2 hits on the day.
On Saturday, April 6, the Greenies played at Dunham, which was a very tough game. Playing on the road against a well-established softball program like Dunham proved to be a little too difficult as your Greenies lost 4-0 in a 7-inning contest. Dunham scored all four runs in the 4th inning as a couple of fielding errors and a well-timed triple proved to be too much for Newman to overcome. Sophomore Jesse Lambert pitched a great game, while going the distance, striking out 8 and allowing 0 earned runs. Unfortunately for Newman, Dunham’s pitcher and her supporting defense were able to keep the Newman hitters scoreless. Although the Newman Greenies were able to out hit the talented Dunham squad, what proved to be the difference were the several spectacular defensive plays thus shutting down several scoring opportunities.
The Greenies play for a chance to win the district 10-2A championship in just their 2nd season back on campus this coming Tuesday against the state’s #2 ranked St Charles Catholic Comets. This game will be the final regular season game for your Newman Softball team as they close out the regular season and move to State Playoffs. We look forward to seeing you at this contest Tuesday April 9th at St. Charles Catholic at 4:30 PM.
Tennis (Girls)
On Monday, March 25th, the Newmans Girls Tennis Team faced their long time rival Sacred Heart. As has been the case for the last few years, it proved to be a close, competitive battle on what was an extremely windy day at City Park.
In the doubles lines, all of the girls fought hard in tight matches. In the Line 1 competition, eighth grade doubles partners Francie Casbarian and Macy Montgomery cruised to an easy victory in the first set, but Sacred Heart put up a tougher fight in the second and Sacred Heart’s Maria English (senior) and Eleanore Brennan (freshman) were able to tie the second set a 6 games all. In the second set tie breaker, the Greenies were dominant and came away with the victory for the team 6-2, 7-6(2). In Line 2, sophomore Lilly Pollack and eighth grader Catherine Pietras played a very close match, but fell short against Sacred Heart’s Laine Suhren and Zoe McCall by a final score of 3-6, 3-6. After dropping the first set, the Line 3 Greenies Team of sophomore Molly Gorman and junior Emma Conner played a very close second set, but were not able to overcome junior Lucy Centola and freshman Charlotte Jenkins of Sacred Heart, 0-6, 4-6.
In the Line 1 Singles Match, team captain Gwendolyn Gray fought off the windy day strategy of Sacred Heart sophomore Emmeline Singer, and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. With the team score tied at 2-2, the remaining Line 2 match was set up to be the decider. After a loss in a very close first set, junior Belle Wanek was tenacious in her consistency and came away with a dominant victory in the second, setting up a decisive third set tiebreaker. With both players exchanging several match points, the tiebreaker proved to be equally exciting as the beginning of the match, but Sacred Heart was able to squeak past the Greenies with a score of 5-7, 6-2, 0-1 (10-12). The Greenies fell to the Sacred Heart girls team by a very close team score of 2-3.
Although the girls were unable to come away with a victory, they all played extremely well and are more motivated than ever for a rematch. They will face Sacred Heart again in both the Regional Tournament (April 15th and 16th at Xavier) and State Championships (April 22 and 23rd in Monroe). Hats off to all of the competitors, it was a very exciting competition to watch. Let’s Go Greenies!
