Track and Field
J. Keffe Hecker Newman Invitational - Senior Night
On Thursday(4/3), after traveling around Louisiana making visits to various competitors’ tracks, Newman track and field got to host their very own invitational at Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park. With that opportunity came the pleasure of getting to host a Senior Night for the Class of 2026 team members and honor them at the beginning of the meet. Parents, teammates, and coaches got the chance to wish the seniors luck in their future endeavors as they move on to college.
However, they’re not gone yet, and they certainly showed up and showed out this meet. For the first time this season, four of our senior girls featured in the 4x800m relay this meet. The usual suspects CC Eustis and Avery Summerour led off and anchored the relay respectively. And, this time around it was a very special treat in getting to see what is usually a sprinter/jumper duo, Ella Aucoin and Claire Charpentier, try their hand at an 800m relay. The pair had never run an 800m race before, but with fierce determination and the encouragement of their classmates, they not only ran the race, but dominated it. Both girls ran splits faster than they had in practice and contributed to a bronze medal-winning 20-second team PR in the contest. This race was truly something to celebrate for these four senior classmates and certainly a race to remember when looking back on their high school track experiences.
Another nod to a gold medal-winning senior performance in the 3200m: Maslen L’Esperance impressed yet again in the two mile. The senior looked strong for all eight laps, won the race by ten seconds, and set a new PR! Congratulations to L’Esperance for this strong performance.
That’s Right…Another School Record! - “Who was that girl that just won the hurdles?” is what everyone around Tad Gormley was saying after Remi Cousin left all her competition in the dust in the 100m hurdles. Cousin won a gold medal by 0.6 seconds, which for those who are unfamiliar, is a lot of time over the span of just 100m. Not only did Cousin make the hurdles in front of her look practically nonexistent, but she set another school record! With her recent school record in the 300m hurdles, Cousin now becomes the proud owner of two Newman school records.
Learning by Doing and Always Improving - It’s important to point out these three athletes and their efforts so far this season. Eloise Puckett, Nick Coffin, and Allie Davison have done nothing but continually show signs of improvement every time they step on the track. Puckett just set a back-to-back PR in the 400m as she broke her prior meet PR on Thursday, and set a new PR breaking 64 seconds for the first time. Coffin astounded on Thursday as he continued the pattern of chipping away at his PRs, getting faster every meet, and running a 24.3 in the 200m and a 56.5 second split in the 4x400. Last but not least, Davison never disappoints when her name is called. Every time she steps onto the track, magic from her hard work and dedication happens and she gets faster and faster. In the 4x400m relay Davison led off the race in a 67-second split, two whole seconds faster than her last appearance. These athletes have clearly demonstrated how practice and repetition pay off!

Mr. Incredible - Yeah yeah, we get it. Dylan Kolenovsky knows how to throw things. Next . . .
No, not next! All jokes aside, Kolenovsky has been having a fantastic season, and last Thursday he won Boys Field MVP of the meet for the third time this year. He also won the Boys Overall MVP of the meet! Kolenovsky placed in all three of his throws and set a new PR in the discus, all with a smile on his face ear to ear as always. He has been . . . incredible.
Congratulations Greenies!
Lacrosse
The lacrosse team continued its strong play last week in defeating Archbishop Shaw High School 23-5 on the Westbank. The Greenies had the game under control throughout, which gave an opportunity for younger players to step up and gain experience. Newman was led in scoring by Max Kukuy with four goals, before the youth took over with Ezra Friend and Colin Farnsworth each adding three goals, and freshmen Reed Sanford, Caleb Wolfson and Joe Morris contributing to the tally.
Newman will step up in competition this week. Before traveling to Lafayette to take on St. Thomas Moore Catholic High School on Friday (4/11), the Greenies will honor their seniors in their last home regular season game tomorrow night (Wednesday 4/8) at 7pm against Brother Martin High School. Chick-fil-A will return for its season finale as well, so see you there!
