The Newman lacrosse team got rolling in the playoffs with a 15-4 quarterfinal win over Brother Martin High School in front of a home crowd at Michael Lupin Field last Thursday night (4/24).  Seniors Max Kukuy (seven goals), Eli Friend (two goals and six assists) and William Mahfouz (three goals and an assist) paced the offense.  Voss Finkelstein man-handled the Crusaders in face offs with 19 of 21 wins.  James Ryan led the defense, and Emeric Laborde had a nice game in goal with seven saves on 11 attempts.

Next up, Newman travels to Catholic High School in Baton Rouge on Friday night at 7pm (5/2) for a semi-final match-up against the Bears.  The Greenies will be playing in hopes of qualifying for their first ever State Championship final game.  They have the talent to win, and we’ll soon see if they can pull it off. Track and Field

District Championship Meet – April 23

Greenies Dominate the District

This past week the strong and speedy Greenies took on the district in the District Championship, and they dominated.

In this meet, the top six in each event score points, and the top four move on to regionals. Each school is allowed to enter a maximum of two athletes per event, of which there are 19. Gold gets ten points and silver gets eight, so the maximum amount of points a team can score is 342 if both athletes in every event take first and second.

With that in mind, our boys and girls teams really racked up the points in this one. The boys team scored almost half the maximum points to earn team runner-up, coming just shy of winning the meet by 22 points. The girls scored 75 percent of the points available (256) to win the district with ease. Congratulations to all the Newman athletes who scored and those who will be moving on to regionals later today (4/29). Well done Greenies!

Track & Field’s Unsung Heroes

As much as Track & Field is a series of individual events, it’s a team sport in scoring, and sacrifices sometimes need to be made to aid the team in accumulating as many points as possible. For example, Julian DeGruy’s number was called when the coaches noticed the 110m hurdles event was very short-handed. J. DeGruy, who had never hurdled before, was asked to compete in the event to get some extra points for the team.

Without hesitation, he accepted and understood his assignment. All season, J. DeGruy has engaged in all his endeavors with a fierce mindset and never shied away from a challenge. This case was no different. Thank you, J. DeGruy for your contributions to the team!

Similarly, Aaron Washington, who can often be found hanging out with J. DeGruy, has the same kind of mindset (no wonder). These two have been pushing and competing with each other all season in the long jump. In a similar fashion, Washington’s number was called for the triple jump, in which he had never before competed.

Not only did Washington accept this challenge, but he is advancing to regionals for an excellent triple jump performance. Congratulations and thank you for stepping up!

Chloe Ferdinand and Ally Davison can always be found together, whether at a meet hanging out or running side by side in practice. The case was no different at the district championship. However, this time around, both girls were listed as alternates: Ferdinand in the 4x100m relay and Davison in the 4x400m relay. Both girls traveled with the team, warmed up, stretched, and prepared to run just in case their name was called, a very selfless process. As luck would have it, Ferdinand’s name was called to fill in on the lead off leg in the 4x100m relay, and fill in she did. She burst out of the gate with truly explosive fire power and kickstarted the relay to a gold medal just a couple tenths of a second shy of a PR. Thank you Ferdinand and Davison for the positive mindsets and selfless nature!

Asher McCoul had a problem this meet, a conflicting obligation. He a is multi-talented runner and singer, and he had a choir performance on the same day as the district meet. So, he traveled with the team, ran the 4x800m relay (winning gold), and then left the meet to go to his choir performance. Notably, he was also listed as the alternate for the 4×400m relay, which is always the last event of the meet and therefore often in need of alternate.

A true teammate, McCoul came all the way back to the meet after his choir performance just to be an available alternate. In the end, an alternate was not needed, but McCoul was there and ready, and for that he gets major kudos for being such a dedicated member of the team.

Finally, another special shoutout is warranted for Rivers LeLong, who has been nothing but a team player. He casts aside the glory of individual events to regularly run in two relays, where individual times are not tracked and individual recognition is rare. While he also runs the open 800m (winning gold at district), he leads off every meet in the 4x800m relay and finishes every meet in the 4x400m relay. With close teammate Logan DeGruy’s winning two golds and a silver and Boys Track MVP - congrats! - LeLong’s three gold medals actually racked up more team points before being divided among each relay competitor, and he is absolutely an MVP in his own right. Accordingly, he deserves sincere thanks for his selfless efforts, setting glory aside, and continuously having a team-centric role on the track team.
