Falgoust’s Walk-off Hit Powers Newman Past Northlake Christian in Game 1
After earning a first-round bye, the #2-ranked baseball team (22-6) played a best-of-three second-round playoff series against Northlake Christian School at Avenger Field last week. In Game 1 on Thursday, the Greenies used early power, timely hitting, and dominant late pitching to secure a 4–3 walk-off victory on VSN here and in front of a large and energetic home crowd.
Newman set the tone immediately in the bottom of the first when Christian Sauska launched a solo home run to left field for a 1–0 lead. The game remained tight through the middle innings, with the visitors tying it in the fourth on a solo shot.
The Greenies answered in the bottom of the fourth when Sauska reached base and Collier Villere followed with an RBI single to center to put Newman back in front, 2–1. However, the Wolverines mounted a rally in the fifth, using multiple doubles to take a 3–2 lead. Newman responded in the bottom half when George Loop drove a ball out of the park to left for a game-tying home run, evening the score at 3–3. | ![]() Instagram: newmanathleticsphotos |
On the mound, Jack Falgoust pitched five strong innings, limiting Northlake Christian to three runs. Villere entered in relief and allowed no hits while striking out five over two innings.
In the top of the seventh, with the game on the line, Villere struck out the side, shutting down Northlake Christian and preserving the tie. In the bottom of the seventh, Malcolm Schairer reached on a single, Loop followed with another hit, and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. With one swing needed, Falgoust delivered, lining a walk-off single to center to score the winning run and seal the 4–3 victory.

Newman Controls Game 2 of the Playoff Series and Defeats Northlake Christian, 6-1
![]() Instagram: newmanathleticsphotos | In Friday night’s Game 2, on VSN here and before an even larger home crowd and packed house, the Greenies delivered a complete performance against Northlake Christian, using early pressure, a decisive fifth inning, and a dominant outing from Christian Sauska to secure a 6–1 playoff win over the Wolverines and earn an opportunity to host a quarterfinal series later this week. |
The Greenies created immediate pressure in the first inning when Charles Wilson and Atticus Lafleur reached base, and Collier Villere put the ball in play to give Newman a 1–0 lead. Newman broke the game open in the fifth inning when George Loop reached and came around to score on a Tanner Robert RBI single to right field, extending the lead to 2–0. Moments later, Christian Sauska delivered a two-run single to center, driving in Benjamin Singer and Tanner Robert to push the lead to 4–0.
Northlake answered with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 4–1, but Sauska limited the damage and maintained control.
Newman added decisive insurance in the sixth inning. Malcolm Schairer reached base and advanced into scoring position before coming home on a groundout to push the lead to 5–1. Benjamin Singer then reached base and advanced into scoring position, and Robert followed by reaching to put two runners on. Sauska came through at the plate once more, lining a two-run single to center to score Singer and Robert and extend the lead to 6–1.
Sauska closed the door from there, finishing a complete-game effort, allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking out nine to seal the second-round win.

Softball
After surging to a huge lead over St. Mary’s Academy earlier this month in front of a packed home crowd, the softball team delivered a commanding victory over the Cougars in the opening playoff round. On Wednesday afternoon in Lake Charles, the Greenies faced a very strong St. Louis Catholic High School (#5) team in a second-round matchup.
From the start, Newman’s offense faced a tough challenge against the Saints’ pitching, though Felicity Drake, Jesse Lambert, Madison Able, and Maddox Bazley all recorded hits. The Greenies broke through in the final inning when a hard-hit ball by Lambert drove in Bazley to get Newman on the scoreboard. | ![]() Instagram: newmanathleticsphotos |
For its part, St. Louis Catholic capitalized on a strong first inning, combining timely hitting with aggressive base running and took advantage of early opportunities to build an unsurmountable lead.
Maryn Huber started in the circle for Newman, with senior Sydney Able providing relief and continuing to compete with determination.
