Baseball
The #9 seed Diamond Greenies earned a first-round playoff bye and used the week off to prepare to play #8 seed Pope John Paul (PJP) in the Regional Round of the LHSAA Select Division III Playoff. Newman will travel to play PJP in Slidell, Louisiana, with the first game of the best 2 out of 3 series tomorrow (Friday, April 26) at 7pm. The second game is set for Saturday at 1pm and, if necessary, the third game will follow immediately on Saturday at 4pm.
It has been another great season of Newman baseball. If you are able, please come over to Slidell this weekend and cheer them on. Go Greenies!!
Lacrosse
For only the third time in its 8-year history, Newman Varsity Lacrosse has punched its ticket to Championship Weekend. In
On Friday evening, the Greenies found themselves in a Quarterfinal rematch at home against the St. Paul’s Wolves, a team they had dominated only 7 days before on Lupin Field on its senior night and final game of the regular season. Consistent with the play a week prior, the Greenies played a complete game on both sides of the field. Equally unfortunate for the boys from Covington, their team was competing without its faceoff specialist, who held Newman to only one (you read that right) successful faceoff in its prior matchup. As a result, the Greenies went almost 50% from the X for the game, which dramatically enhanced their ability to control the pace and force St. Paul’s to play their game.
On the offensive side of the ball, scoring contributions were made by 5 different players, including Senior Heid Manning (1) in the final game of his 4-year varsity career on Lupin Field, Junior William Mahfouz (3), Junior Eli Friend (3), Junior Max Kukuy (5) and Sophomore Price Demeyers (5). Friend also accounted for 5 assists, 7 ground balls, 4 caused turnovers and was awarded LHSLL Player of The Week Honors (image below).
The Newman defense went beast mode on the Wolves, accounting for 14 ground balls and 9 caused turnovers in the matchup (contributions by Junior Patrick Landry, Senior William Darragh, Senior Paolo Guillen, Junior Griffin Maxwell and Sophomore Corbet Parino). Also in the last home game of his illustrious 4-year career for Newman Lacrosse as its starting keeper, Senior Goalie McCall Engelhardt denied St. Paul’s on 12 of the 17 shots he faced.
With the win, Newman Lacrosse will travel to Catholic High of Baton Rouge on Friday for a 7:00 pm Semi-Final Matchup against the Bears, with the winner advancing to the finals on Sunday at 1:00pm against the winner of Jesuit and St. Thomas Moore of Lafayette (also hosted at Catholic High). Please come out and support the Greenies as they position themselves towards its first state championship.
Newman Middle School Lacrosse – just as the opening whistle for the Quarterfinal Varsity Game was set to go off at Lupin Field, the Newman Middle School Lacrosse Team was charging its goalie at Jefferson Playground to celebrate its second consecutive MS Lacrosse Championship in the same number of years of the program’s existence. A huge congratulations to all the 6-8th graders who dedicated themselves to work hard again this season and bring another championship Uptown for Newman Middle School, and an equally enormous thanks to its incredible coaching staff. The future is VERY bright for Newman Lacrosse!
Tennis (Boys)
Since our last report, the Varsity Boys Tennis Team has been very busy. Back on April 10, we honored our three Seniors, Archer VanDenburgh, Ian Todd and Simms Hardin on Senior Day. The Newman Cheerleaders were kind enough to attend along with several friends from the Newman Baseball and Lacrosse teams. There was supposed to be a match against Willow, but our opponents failed to field a full team. Hardin and VanDenburgh destroyed Willow’s only doubles team 6-0, 6-0.
On April 15 and 16, Newman hosted the Regional Tournament at the Xavier Tennis Facility and managed to have all of it’s players qualify for the State Tournament in Monroe. In Singles, Baldwin Key defeated St. Charles’ Nicholas Abadie 6-1, 6-2, but lost in the Semi-Finals to Haynes Academy’s Arav Gandhi in a close match 6-3, 7-5. Jai Bansal beat St. Thomas Aquainas’ Daniel Wittie 6-3, 6-0, but lost to De la Salle’s Brandt Haynes in the Semi-Finals 6-3, 6-1. In Doubles, VanDenburgh and Hardin beat Haynes Academy’s Line 2 team, 6-0, 6-0, then beat ED White’s Line 2 doubles team, 6-1, 6-1. In the Semi-Finals, VanDenburgh and Hardin faced off against against fellow teammates, Ian Todd and Evan Sosa, who had previously defeated St. Thomas Aquinas’ Line 2 Doubles Team 6-0, 6-0 and Pope John Paul’s Line 2 Doubles Team 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Semi-Finals. In a match full of smiles and laughter, VanDenburgh and Hardin won 6-2, 6-0. One of this matches’ highlights was when Todd hit VanDenburgh in the stomach with his serve to win the point. On the opposite side of the Doubles Draw, Newman’s Line 3 team, Pierce Cunningham and Paul Richard, made it to the Finals by defeating Northlake Christian’s Line 3 Doubles Team 6-3, 6-2, ED White’s Line 1 Doubles Team 6-3, 6-3 and Pope John Paul’s Line 1 Doubles Team 6-3, 6-2. In the all Newman Final, VanDenburgh and Hardin prevailed 6-1, 6-1.
On April 22 and 23 at the State Championships in Monroe, the Boys Team had a rough start, losing their Line 2 Singles Player, Baldwin Key, to an injury that occurred off of the court. Newman’s Line 1 Singles player, Jai Bansal beat Sterlington’s Brody Evans in the first round 6-1, 6-2, but was defeated by the eventual champion, Ben Reinhauer of St. Louis Catholic 6-1, 6-0 in the 2nd Round. In Doubles, Newman’s Line 2 Doubles Team of Todd and Sosa lost to Univerity Lab’s Dalton Rouselle and William White 6-2, 6-4 in the 1st Round. Newman’s Line 3 Doubles Team of Pierce Cunningham and Paul Richard beat Episcopal’s Hayden Singh and John Staley 6-2, 6-1 in Round 1, but lost in the next round to St. Louis Catholic’s Max Mixon and Conner Istre in a competitive match 7-5, 6-3. Newman’s Line 1 Doubles Team of VanDenburgh and Hardin defeated Loyola Prep’s Andrew Tatum and James Snyder 6-0, 6-3 in the First Round, and St. Louis Catholic’s Bennet Farque and Miller McFatter 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 in the 2nd Round, but ultimately succommed to Epicopal’s Ethan Davis and Michael Zhang in the Quarterfinals 6-3, 3-6, 10-12 in a very exciting contest marred by University Lab’s team vehemently supporting the Epicopal team in a scene that has become all too familiar for Newman at the State Tournament.
Tennis (Girls)
On Monday, April 15th and Tuesday, April 16th the Newman Girls Tennis Team co-hosted the Regional Tennis Tournament with friendly rival Sacred Heart at the Xavier Tennis Facility. Although not necessarily favored, all of the Newman girls continued to improve their level of play and, through their focus and determination, were able to capture the Regional Championship.
In Line 1 Singles, junior Gwendolyn Gray was dominant in all of her first matches and cruised through the early rounds to face the talented E.D White twin sisters Joy Patten (semifinals) and Emily Patten (finals). The final match proved to be a thriller. After ceding the first set 6-1, E.D White’s Emily Patten fought back and began to gain momentum, taking the lead at 3-5 in the second. Regaining her focus, Gwendolyn was able to turn her level of play up a notch to win 4 straight games and take the second set, the match and the Regional Championship, with a final score of 6-1, 7-5. In Line 2 Singles, junior Belle Wanek continued her consistent play, cruising to the quarter finals by easily defeating the Line 2 Singles player from St. Thomas Aquinas, Alyssa Danz, 6-0, 6-0, contributing to the team victory and moving on to the State Tournament..
In Line 1 Doubles, eighth graders Macy Montgomery and Francie Casbarian easily made it through to the quarter finals where they played a thrilling match against Sacred Heart’s Line 2, winning 7-5, 6-2. Having to face regional rival Sacred Heart Line 1 in the finals, the girls were able to come through under pressure in three sets to win the championship 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The Line 2 team of sophomore Lilly Pollack and eighth grader Catherine Pietras was able to contribute to the team effort by defeating their first 2 opponents and moving through to the quarters. Newman’s Line 3 players Molly Gorman and Emma Conner also played well and added to the team’s success by winning their first match. They had a tough draw in the tournament and could not overcome the highly seeded Sacred Heart Line 2 team in the second round.
The girls and Coach Brian and Coach Logan after the Regional Championship
Congratulations to all of the girls, Coach Logan Bueche and Coach Brian Yellin for a successful season as it truly was a team effort. All of the girls competed hard and showed amazing team spirit, sportsmanship and played to a level deserving of the Regional Title.
The Louisiana State Division III High School Tennis Championship Tournament took place in Monroe on Monday, April 23rd and Tuesday, April 24th. After winning the last 4 years in a row, this year’s young team faced stiff competition with the addition of new schools and new players to the division.
In the doubles competition, the Line 1 team of eighth graders Francie Casbarian and Macy Montgomery played their best tennis of the season. After winning their first four matches, they then faced the Line 1 Team of longtime state rival University Lab (UHigh). Their effort in this match was nothing short of amazing. In the first set, the girls went toe to toe with the much higher ranked Zoe Stein and Lauren Longmire, but dropped the set 4-6. In the second, the girls were down 1-5, but refused to give up and dug deep to win 4 straight games to tie the set at 5-5. The next 2 games were extremely competitive and thrilling to watch. Both games went to deuce several times, but the Greenies fell just short and finished in second place, 4-6, 5-7. In Line 2 doubles, sophomore Lilly Pollack and eighth grader Catherine Pietras had a tough draw and faced the Line 1 team of Loyola Prep. It was an extremely tight match and the girls played hard, but fell by a score of 5-7, 3-6.
In the singles competition, junior Gwendolyn Gray continued her dominant play and dropped just 2 games through the first 3 matches of the competition, winning points for the team and advancing to the semi-finals. On the second day of the tournament in front of a raucous crowd, the Greenie fought hard and played a tough match against the tricky Merrill Eglin of Episcopal High, but was not able to come away with a victory, final score 3-6, 3-6. In the first round, Line 2 singles player Belle Wanek played amazingly against Caroline Rout of Vidalia, contributing to the team effort by winning 6-3, 6-1. Advancing to the second round, she then faced UHigh’s Line 1 player Mary Longmire, but was unable to defeat the Division 1 college recruit and highest seeded player in the tournament.
The girls backstage with plaque
At the end of the tournament, the girls team had a total of 8.5 points. Although it was not enough to win a 5th consecutive title, this young team was able to exceed expectations and come away with a second place finish. During the season, it truly was amazing to watch all of these girls flourish under many pressure situations and consistently improve their level of play as the season progressed. With such a young team, the future of tennis is certainly bright and we are all very excited about what they will accomplish in next year’s season and beyond! Go Greenies!!!
