Yesterday (4/21) at the Joseph Bartholomew Golf Course, the boys golf team continued their winning ways at the district tournament, finishing first in district and remaining undefeated for the season. Other participating schools were Metairie Park Country Day School, Northlake Christian School, Fisher Middle/High School and John Curtis Christian School, among others.

Newman was led by D.J. Randolph who has continued to display his much-improved game this year, after great effort and commitment since last season. He again won Medalist Honors with a stellar performance on an unpredictable course due to less-than-ideal conditions, with a 78. Jax Mendler (79) is always battling for Medalist Honors and finished second for Newman, only one stroke behind Randolph.

Although golf is an individual sport, it takes a team to bring the trophies back to Newman, and it took good rounds from Chase Hoffman (82) and Colin Moffett (88) to contribute to the total team score of 327, beating a tough John Curtis team who scored 335. Fisher and Country Day finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

Next up, the regional tournament for the girls is next Tuesday (4/29) at Santa Maria Golf Course in Baton Rouge and the regional tournament for the boys is next Wednesday (4/30) at The Island Golf Course in Plaquemine. Go Newman Golf!

Track and Field

Brother Martin “Chubby Marks” Relays – April 11

While many had their sights on spring break the night of April 11, the Track and Field team had theirs set on something different. The time for rest was not that night, as our runners, throwers, and jumpers had some unfinished business to handle before they were ready to kick their feet up.

Distance Boys Make a Statement

This part of the season is the time to make one’s mark on the track here on the cusp of the championship gauntlet, starting with district, then regional, and finally the state meet. Now is when athletes focus on putting themselves in the best position to be seeded well at districts and show their competition what they need to be worried about. Newman’s distance boys did exactly that, setting seasonal bests across the board in the 4x800m, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. Rivers Lelong, Jack Hance, Logan DeGruy, Maslen L’Esperance, and Asher McCoul all pushed themselves to the max to let the district know what kind of five headed monster they are dealing with.

Personal Record Party

The team had some fantastic PRs at this meet for so many of the athletes. The hard work throughout the season has clearly been paying off. Eloise Puckett set, yet again, another PR in the 400m. Elise Barnett ran her best time in the 1600m. Louis Barnett vaulted to new heights, and Aaron Washington jumped his furthest in the long jump. Jada Recasner hurdled and jumped her bests and won golds in the 300mH and triple jump. Jack Stewart, a freshman who recently made a transition from distance to sprinting in the middle of the season, broke 59 second in the 400m and found himself a spot on the 4x400m relay. The dedication and can-do attitudes of our athletes is really coming through at the right time as the championship season approaches.

Special Shoutouts

Heidi Smith and Catherine Johnson have been working hard for weeks to figure out this whole ‘launching yourself over a bar with a pole twice your height’ thing. This process is not easy! As Coach Dave Svobada has noted, “You have to embrace a little bit of crazy in yourself to pole vault.” Well, both girls embraced the crazy at Chubby Marks and set themselves new PRs and tied for bronze medals. Congratulations to both for sticking it out, trusting the process, and embracing the crazy.

Another special shoutout goes to Madelyn Argote. An excellent sprinter, Argote found herself in a challenging situation this season when she realized the leg injury she had been battling had not quite resolved in time for track. While disappointed, Argote decided it best to mentally reframe and take her talents elsewhere that limits heavy impact on her leg. She has taken the season to intensely focus on javelin, and on April 11, she set a new PR and took third overall in the javelin, earning a bronze finish. Congratulations to Argote on her ability to push forward and make the best of a tough situation.

Next, the team will compete in the district meet tomorrow (4/23), followed by the regional meet next week (4/29) and the state meet on May 9. Good luck!

Lacrosse

Newman lacrosse finished the regular season strong, beating two worthy opponents going into the break and now the playoffs.

On April 9 against Brother Martin High School, it was a warm-up for the team’s first round playoff game this week against the same team, and Senior Night at home on VSN here over the Crusaders. The eleven senior honorees were Voss Finkelstein, Eli Friend, Charlie Guy, Max Kukuy, Patrick Landry, Jake Lonseth, William Mahfouz, Griffin Maxwell, Mason Palmer, George Pipes and Gus Wilson.

The Greenies took control from the start on the way to a 17-9 victory, and were led in scoring by Mahfouz and Kukuy, with five goals each. Junior Price DeMeyers added three goals and three assists. On defense, Landry led the way with four ground balls, and protected Laborde, who again showed growth in only allowing five goals. The senior Wilson also played in goal for the seniors’ regular season home finale.

Varsity Sports Now, April 9, 2025

The team returned to the pitch on April 11, when they traveled to Lafayette for a much anticipated match at St. Thomas More Catholic High School. The Greenies got what they expected, holding on for a 16-14 victory to sew up the three seed in the playoffs starting this week. Kukuy led the team with seven goals on only nine shots, and added an assist to cap his stellar season. DeMeyers (3), Friend (2) and Christopher Connolly (2) combined for seven more goals, with Jackson Fitzpatrick and William Long rounding out the scoring with a goal each.

Newman returns to action this week with a quarterfinal playoff match against Brother Martin High School at 7pm at Michael Lupin Field on Thursday April 24th. Chick-fil-A will be on hand again, so come out and support the Greenies!

Softball

It’s been a busy two weeks for the varsity softball team, playing four regular season games in just five days prior to spring break and then two playoff games, which will be covered in next week’s report.

Proving their resilience and dominance on the field, the Greenies outscored their final regular season opponents 67-14 and extended their win streak to a season-high seven games, heading into the playoffs with plenty of momentum. With an incredible showing of power, depth, and ability to thrive under pressure, here’s how the stretch unfolded.

On April 7, In a thrilling display of power and poise, the Newman Greenies stormed past Country Day 14-3 on Senior Night, delivering a dominant 14-run performance and showcasing grit at every position. The evening wasn’t just about the scoreboard, it was a heartfelt celebration of three remarkable seniors: Brett Beasley, Catherine Fitzpatrick, and Sydney Gallagher.

These three student-athletes have been cornerstones of the program, playing pivotal roles not only in this squad’s success but in re-establishing varsity softball at Newman just three years ago.

While it’s bittersweet to see their time in a Greenies uniform come to an end, the entire Newman community is incredibly proud of them and their contributions to Newman softball will echo long after the final out. With bright futures ahead, wherever life takes them next, they will always be Greenies at heart. 💚

After falling behind early to the Cajuns, Newman flipped the switch in the third inning and never looked back. She threw strikes when it mattered and also helped her own cause at the plate with a key triple and an RBI single, capping a standout all-around performance. The defense had its moments too, with Madison Able and Beasley making crucial plays in the infield, including several fielder’s choices that halted Cajun rallies in their tracks.

Even when miscues threatened momentum, Newman showed maturity and bounced back with poise. Whether it was Sydney Gallagher’s heads-up baserunning, Felcity Drake’s consistency in the clutch, or Maddox Bazley’s hustle on the base paths, the Greenies played with passion and precision from start to finish.
