Newman Lacrosse Wraps Up a Quarterfinal Battle and a Season of Pride

The lacrosse team closed out its season on Friday night in a hard‑fought quarterfinal matchup against Loyola College Prep, falling 13–7 on VSN here. With the boys’ leaving everything on the field, it was the kind of game that showed qualities that defined their entire season: resilience, heart, and cohesiveness.

Newman’s offense had five different players find the back of the net. Christopher Connolly and Price Demeyers each buried two goals, while William Long, Ezra Friend, and Luke Whelan added one apiece. Whelan and Colin Farnsworth also notched assists to round out a strong all‑around performance.

On the ground, the Greenies hustled from whistle to whistle. Connolly and Farnsworth scooped up four ground balls each, Whelan added three, and Demeyers chipped in two. Jackson Fitzpatrick, Edge Levine, Charles Johnson, and goalie Emeric Laborde each grabbed one as well. James Ryan forced a key turnover, continuing his season‑long defensive leadership.

At the faceoff X, Farnsworth battled his way to seven wins, with Parker Connolly adding one more. In goal, Laborde turned away seven shots.

Although the scoreboard didn’t lean Newman’s way, the weekend marked a celebration of excellence across the roster. Several Greenies earned well‑deserved recognition on the LHSLL East All‑District Teams, with Demeyers, Long, Ryan, Corbett Parrino, and Laborde making the first team and Christopher Connolly, Whelan, and Farnsworth making the second team.

The Greenies may have played their final game of the year, but they walk away with heads high, memories made, and a foundation that only gets stronger. The season was full of growth, leadership, and heart, and the team has plenty to look forward to next year. The eternally grateful senior parents have nothing but praise for the team’s coaches for their time and dedication in leading the boys with passion, purpose, and unwavering support this season. Their commitment to developing strong athletes and even stronger young men means more than they know.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics team competed in the LHSAA state championship meet on Saturday at Baton Rouge Magnet High School in Baton Rouge. Greenies Esme Brannon, Claire Cope, Mia Hoffman, and Jackie Bellaire competed against 82 other gymnasts representing 17 schools from throughout Louisiana.

Congratulations to Cope, who came in 22nd place in the Division I all-around category in her first year competing on the varsity squad. Also congratulations to Bellaire, competing in Division II, who medaled third in the balance beam and earned a sixth-place finish in the all around.

Way to go, Greenies!

The second inning was more of the same as the Greenies pushed another eleven runs across to take a commanding 15-0 lead. Maryn Huber, Felicity Drake, Madison Able, Caroline Kenter, and Sydney Able all had hits, Dulitz hit an inside-the-park home run, and Hollier Sutherlin scored on a tag-up.

Huber was dominant once again in the circle, earning the win for the home team. She threw three hitless, scoreless innings, striking out eight and walking one.

The win improved Newman’s record to 13-7 on the season, with the Greenies winning eight of their last nine games and now eager to embrace their likely underdog role on the road in the playoffs the rest of the way.

Next up, the girls will play a second-round playoff match tomorrow (4/22) at 5pm in Lake Charles against the #5 seed, St. Louis Catholic High School (20-6), with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals. Go Greenies!

Track and Field

Greenies Glisten at Strawberry Relays: Lelong and DeGruy Lead the Charge in Hammond

HAMMOND, LA — On the track of Southeastern Louisiana University on Thursday, the track and field team delivered a distance-running masterclass at the Strawberry Relays. While the competition was fierce, Newman’s endurance stars ensured the Greenies were the talk of the track as the team prepared for the postseason push.

Lelong and DeGruy Set the Gold Standard

The highlight of the meet belonged to the Greenies' distance specialists, who put on a clinic in pacing and power. Rivers Lelong captured a thrilling victory in the 800 meter run, slicing through the field to take first place with a time of 2:00.60. Lelong’s kick in the final 100 meters set the tone for a night defined by Newman's grit. Not to be outdone, Logan DeGruy put on a dominant display of stamina in the 3200 meter run. DeGruy gapped the field early and never looked back, securing a first place finish with a time of 10:29.87. The duo’s performance, combined with a gold-medal effort from the Boys 4x800 Meter Relay Team (8:33.76), signaled the Greenies are serious contenders in the distance categories heading into the district meet.

Field and Sprint Standouts

While the distance crew led the charge, the Greenies found success across the stadium:

  • Field Excellence: Jada Recasner took first place in the triple jump (35-7.50) and second in the long jump. Meanwhile, Dylan Kolenovsky claimed first place in the discus with a massive 165-4.00 toss.

  • Sprint Power: Madelyn Argote fueled the girls' team with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash (58.67) and a strong fourth place in the 200-meter dash.

  • Vertical Gains: Randall McMillan secured a fifth place finish in the pole vault, clearing 9-0.00.

Next Stop: The District 10-2A Championship

The Greenies now turn their attention to the "second season." On Thursday (4/23), Newman travels to Harold "Hoss" Memtsas Stadium in Harvey for the LHSAA District 10-2A Meet. With a trip to the regional meet on the line, every second and every inch counts. Athletes must place in the top four to keep their championship dreams alive.

Meet schedule:

  • 2:30pm: Field events begin with pole vault

  • 3pm: All other field events (jumps, throws, high jump)

  • 4:45pm: Running events kick off with the 4x800 meter relay

  • 6:00pm: All other running events

Let’s see the Newman community out in full force to cheer on the entire Greenie squad as they hunt for district hardware! Go Greenies!

Tennis

At the regionals tournament today at University of New Orleans Tennis Center, the girls doubles pairing of sophomores Macy Montgomery and Francie Casbarian finished on top, marking the second time in the last three years Newman girls have taken the regionals title. On the boys side, freshmen Miles Ogden and Peyton Dang also captured the regional title and will advance to the state tournament next week.

In singles, Adalie Guth battled back to win her first regional championship, while Arjun Walvekar advanced to the semifinals but fell just short in the finals.

Congratulations to the six senior tennis players who are wrapping up their stellar high school tennis careers: Evan Sosa, Lilly Pollack, Jai Bansal, Molly Gorman, Thomas Gershanik, and Molly Day.
