Baseball

The Diamond Greenies collected 4 more Ws in an exciting final week of the regular season that included a 2 game series sweep against district rival Country Day, and 2 epic, come-from-behind victories against 4A Archbishop Shaw and 5A H.L Bourgeois.

The action started last Tuesday evening with a road game against Country Day at Wally Pontiff Playground. Sophomore Pitcher Jack Falgoust was outstanding in leading the Greenies to a 3-0 victory. Falgoust went the distance, with 5 strikeouts while only allowing 4 hits over 7 innings. Senior Guy Guidroz, who hit the ball well all week (more on that later), led the Greenies with two hits.

On Thursday, the Diamond Greenies picked up a close 2-1 win against Country Day in a pitcher’s duel between Newman’s Charles Wilson and Cajun ace, Owen Marchal. Newman’s only runs came in the bottom of the first inning, when Peter Loop and Jack Nesser reached base on back-to-back walks, and advanced to 2nd and 3rd on Charles Wilson’s sacrifice bunt. Loop scored easily on a passed ball, and as the Cajun catcher and pitcher collected the baseball and discussed the defensive breakdown, Nesser stole the uncovered home plate for the game deciding run. The Greenies were fortunate to get those two early runs, as the Cajun pitcher only gave up one hit and one base on balls the rest of the way. Newman Pitcher Charles Wilson was equal to the challenge, picking up the win while striking out 5 Cajuns and only allowing 1 run over 5 ⅓ innings. Peter Loop closed the game for the Greenies, striking out 2 more Cajuns over the final 1 ⅔ innings.

With Narco by Blasterjaxx & Timmy Trumpet blaring on Brian Stewart’s boombox, Loop’s late season emergence as Greenie closer has been key to Newman’s latest 8 game win streak.

Newman’s Class of ‘24 Baseball Seniors and their parents gearing up for one last run!

Saturday was Senior Day, and a large crowd came out to enjoy the weather and honor Newman baseball’s Seniors! While grill-masters Sandy Villere, Big Peter Loop and David Joseph were pumping out delicious burgers and dogs, the Greenies gave fans their money’s worth on the diamond.

Many thanks to D.J., Sandy & Peter for manning the grill!

The excitement started in the bottom of the 4th inning, with Archbishop Shaw leading 1-4. Senior First Baseman Jacob Dusansky drew a walk to get things going. Then Senior Left Fielder Guy Guidroz launched a two-run dinger (his 2nd HR on the year) over the left field fence, cutting the Shaw lead to 3-4. The Greenie momentum was short-lived, however, as Shaw extended its lead to 3-8. In the bottom of the 5th, Newman responded with a 3-run inning that included a walk by Senior Conners Palmer and singles by Loop, Wilson, and Dusansky. Shaw added another run in the top of the 6th, making the score 6-9. But, our Diamond Greenies were not about to throw in the towel.

In one of the most exciting half innings in recent memory, the Newman bats came alive in the bottom of the 6th with back-to-back singles by Senior Ethan Dulitz, who went 3-3 on the day, and Sophomore Collier Villere. The two singles were followed by a dramatic 3-run home run by Loop (2-4, 3 RBIs, 2 Runs), a walk by Wilson and a 2-run round-tripper by Sophomore Christian Sauska (2-4, 2 RBIs, 2 Runs, 7 total bases). With Newman up 11-9, Senior Closer Peter Loop emerged from the tunnel with Narco booming, took the mound for the top of the 7th and earned the save, sealing the victory and moving Newman’s win streak to 7 games.

Sauska goes yard & revs up the Greenie dugout with the game deciding 2-run HR against Shaw!

The Greenie thrill ride did not end on Saturday, as Newman quickly turned it around for their final regular season match-up against the H.L. Bourgeois Braves at Avenger on Monday night. Once again, the game was a snoozer for the better part of the first 5 innings. With Newman down 2-9 in the bottom of the 6th, the Greenies picked up two runs when Wilson was hit by a pitch, Sauska walked, Dusansky had an RBI ground-out, and the clutch-hitting Guidroz delivered an RBI single. The Braves added a run in the top of the 7th, giving them a 5-10 lead heading into the bottom of the final inning.

This thrilling Greenie comeback started with a single by Dulitz, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Then, Junior Henry Cook brought Dulitz home on an RBI line drive to center field. Loop reached base on an error, and Cook advanced to third. A sacrifice bunt by Nesser brought Cook home and Loop to third, cutting the Braves lead to 6-10. With two outs, an RBI single by Sauska scored Loop and Newman was now down 7-10. The Greenie two-out-rally continued, as Dusansky singled and Guidroz (2-4, 3 RBIs) tripled, scoring 2 more runs. Down by only one run, but still with two outs, Senior Clayton Stevens drew an important walk bringing Dulitz back to the plate for the second time in the inning…. and boy did Dulitz deliver!! With Greenies on first and third base, Dulitz walked ‘em off with a 2-run game-ending double to right field, concluding his memorable 2-4, 3 RBI outing where he was also the winning Greenie pitcher.

With another exciting and successful week of baseball behind them, the Greenie win streak moved to 8 games, as Newman finished the regular season with an impressive 17-10 record, the #9 seed in the Select Division III playoffs, and a first round bye. After a week off to get healthy, Newman will travel to play Pope John Paul in Slidell, Louisiana for a best of three series running from April 23 - 27.

Go Greenies!!

Gymnastics

At the LHSAA Gymnastics Championships this past Saturday, Newman’s Jackie Bellaire competed for the first time in Level 4 (against 50 other girls) and came in 12th in the floor exercise, 13th in beam, and 18th in all around

Congrats to Jackie Bellaire on a terrific showing!

Lacrosse

On a beautiful Friday evening, Newman lacrosse celebrated both its 2024 senior class and its final game of the regular season, hosting St. Paul’s School of Covington. Unfortunately for the Wolves, the Greenies fed off the energy of the evening and the exuberant crowd, playing one of its most complete games of the season.

Junior William Mahfouz had potentially the best outing of his career for the Greenies, leading the team in scoring and putting 4 shots into the cage on only 5 attempts. In addition, and as has been a theme in the majority of their successes this season, the team saw additional contributions in the W from all over the roster.

Junior Eli Friend added 3 goals on the plus side of the scoreboard, and Junior Max Kukuy and Senior Heid Manning contributed 2 goals a piece. Senior Coalter McCall, Junior Patrick “Pole Goal” Landry and Sophomores Price Demeyers and William Long also found the back of the net in helping to secure the 15-8 home win for the Greenies heading into the playoffs. On the defensive side of the ball, and in the last regular season game of his illustrious 4-year tenure starting in goal for Newman Varsity Lacrosse, Senior Goalie McCall Engelhardt denied St. Paul’s on 18 of their 26 shots.

With the win, Newman Lacrosse moved past St. Thomas Moore of Lafayette and up to No.3 in the final LHSLL rankings (behind only No. 1 Jesuit and No. 2 Catholic High of Baton Rouge), and will host a rematch with the Wolves at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 19th - with the winner advancing to championship weekend in Baton Rouge the following week. Please come out and support the Greenies as they position themselves for a strong playoff push and a charge towards a potential state championship.

Softball

Your #18 ranked Newman Softball Greenies played their final regular season game this past Tuesday against the #2 ranked St. Charles Catholic Comets for the District 10-2A Regular Season Championship. Unfortunately for the Greenies, the Comets proved to be too much as they defeated the Greenies by a score of 13-0. The game was not a total loss as the Greenies finished the regular season in 2nd place in their district.

The Softball Playoff seeding and bracket was unkind to the Greenies as they were forced to head back to New Iberia for the 3rd time in 12 months. Although playing against a very talented Catholic New Iberia Team for the 3rd time put the Greenies in a familiar spot heading into the 1st round, the outcome was not the result Newman desired. Catholic N.I. used a 7 run 3rd inning to pull away from the Greenies, thus ending their season with a 12-2 loss.

This year’s Newman Softball Team finished with a very respectable 12-6 record. This year’s Senior Class will be missed as Emma Passler, Maddie Herbert, Maggie Mills, and Ella Faliveno have helped to lay the foundation for this team to build on for many years to come. The entire Varsity Newman Softball team would like to thank their fans who came out to watch them play this season. We look forward to off season workouts and the start of next season as we will look to build on the momentum for this year.

Tennis (Girls)

On Monday, April 8th, the Newman Girls Tennis Team played their last regular season match of 2024 against Ursuline Academy at City Park.  It was a great way to end with all 4 of the girls lines coming away with wins for the team.

In Line 1 singles, junior Belle Wanek played another consistent match and cruised to straight set victory against Ursuline sophomore Mylah George, 6-2, 6-1.  In Line 2 Singles, sophomore Molly Gorman dropped the first set to Ursuline freshman Baileigh McFadden (2-6), but dominated in the second set, winning 6-0.  That set up a close and thrilling third set tiebreaker in which the young Greenie was able to deliver under pressure and seal the victory for the team, final score 2-6, 6-0, 1-0(8).

In Line 1 Doubles, Newman sophomore Lilly Pollack and eighth grader Catherine Pietras played an excellent match against Ursuline freshman Sloan Brown and Maria Rioja.  After winning the first set easily, the Ursuline girls put up a much harder fight in the second, but the Greenies were able to overcome in the end by a score of 6-2, 6-4.  In Line 2 Doubles, sophomore Psalm McClellan and junior Emma Connor also played one of their best matches of the season, winning by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
