Newman Varsity Softball Team Splits Week, Moves to 6-6 on the Season

The softball team split their two games last week to improve to a 6-6 overall record on the season. Last Wednesday (3/26), the Greenies faced off against Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies at the JPRD Softball Complex. Sydney Able was the standout performer at the plate for the Greenies, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, helping to keep her team in the game offensively. Maryn Huber started as the pitcher for Newman and was replaced by Sydney Able in the 4th inning after throwing 90 pitches. Alyse Dulitz, Maryn Huber, Caroline Kenter, and Brett Beasley all contributed hits for Newman, with Kenter leading the way with a double and scoring two of the team's runs. Despite these efforts, the Greenies couldn’t quite keep up with the Yellow Jackets’ offensive onslaught, falling short 15-5.

On Friday (4/28), the team came back to the JPRD Softball Complex and was firing on all cylinders in a big 10-0 win over Episcopal School of Baton Rouge. The Greenies came out strong, jumping to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Maryn Huber singled, driving in two runs, followed by a walk drawn by Sydney Gallagher that scored one more. Catherine Fitzpatrick then grounded out to score another run, and Maddox Bazley added a single that brought in the final run of the inning, giving Newman a 5-0 lead.

The Greenies didn’t stop there, scoring another five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Felicity Drake started it off with a two-run homer to center field. Fitzpatrick and Bazley each singled to drive in one run apiece, and Beasley capped off the inning with another single that scored a run, pushing Newman’s lead to 10-0.

Huber was dominant in the circle, earning the win for the Greenies. She pitched five shutout innings, allowing just four hits, striking out five, and walking three. The Knights’ pitcher struggled on the mound, allowing nine hits and 10 runs (nine earned) over four innings, while striking out two and walking five. Offensively, Huber and Bazley both had two hits, while Drake, Fitzpatrick, and Bazley each drove in two runs. Bazley was also active on the base paths, stealing two bases. Newman was patient at the plate, drawing five walks throughout the game.

As they move closer into district play, the Greenies will have a very busy week on the diamond as they will play four important games this week. Also, the girls will travel to Baton Rouge on Friday to attend the college softball game between #5 LSU vs #24 Alabama, which should be a great game at the next level between two talented teams.

This Week’s Upcoming Games:

  • Today, 4/1 vs. Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies at Carrollton (The Fly) at 4:00pm

  • Wednesday, 4/2 vs. Walter L. Cohen High School at JPRD Softball Complex at 5:00pm

  • Thursday, 4/3 vs. St. Katharine Drexel Preparatory School at JPRD Softball Complex at 5:00pm

  • Saturday, 4/5 vs. Woodlawn High School at Woodlawn (Baton Rouge) at 12pm

Baseball

Newman Falls to Slidell High School

The baseball team came up short against Slidell High School last Wednesday (3/26), falling 4-1. The Tigers got on the board early, scoring one run in the first inning after a double. Newman responded in the top of the second when Charles Wilson drew a walk, forcing in the tying run to make it 1-1. However, Slidell took control in the third inning, pushing across three runs to build a 4-1 lead. Despite battling throughout the game, Newman couldn't find an offensive rhythm and was unable to mount a comeback.

Newman Edges Archbishop Hannan 2–1 Behind Zweifler’s Clutch Double and Strong Pitching

On Friday (3/28), Newman pulled out a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Archbishop Hannan High School on VSN here, relying on timely hitting and solid pitching performances to secure the win.

The game remained scoreless through three innings as both teams showcased strong pitching. The Hawks struck first in the top of the fourth, scoring one run on a groundout. In the fifth inning, though, Alex Dulitz singled to left and then stole second, putting pressure on the defense. Tanner Robert drove in Dulitz, tying the game at 1–1. Then Tyler Zweifler smashed a double to center field, driving in Robert and giving Newman a 2–1 lead.

Newman’s defense held steady through the final innings, including a dramatic seventh inning finish. Archbishop Hannan threatened with runners on second and third and just one out, when Newman issued an intentional walk to load the bases. The game ended with a clutch double play started by second baseman Jack Falgoust and turned by shortstop Collier Villere to first baseman Henry Cook, preserving the 2–1 victory.

Track and Field

Rummel’s Ronnie Doyle Relays 2025

On Friday, Archbishop Rummel High School’s Ronnie Doyle Relays concluded with some incredible takeaways. The meet started off with Ella Aucoin jumping a season best in the high jump and earning herself a bronze medal. Then the boys 4x800 impressed yet again. From an unseeded heat with no competition strong enough to challenge them, Jack Hance, Asher McCoul, Rivers Lelong, and Logan DeGruy pushed their limits and led the whole race way out in front by themselves, ultimately setting a fast enough time to win a silver medal. The girls 4x100m relay demonstrated excellent translational capabilities, as they had been practicing a new way to perform blind baton exchanges all week. Demonstrating why practice is essential to performance, the handoffs were executed perfectly by Aucoin, Brooke Montano, Lili Arjmand, and Claire Charpentier, and they placed 4th in what was a very competitive race.

School Record Alerts! After winning bronze in the 100m hurdles, Remi Cousin came back for more. She made sure people knew that she is the queen of the hurdles by not only winning the 300m hurdles in a blazing fast time of 46.77, but also setting a new Newman school record! It’s not every day you get to witness a school record being broken. In fact, many often never get to see it happen over their four years competing. However, we were lucky enough to see two new records being set. That’s right, two school records in one day! Toward the end of the meet, Jada Recasner rocked the boat and set another new school record in the triple jump, jumping a very impressive 35’ 9.5, and earning herself a gold medal. Congratulations to Cousin and Recasner, who are now officially enshrined in Newman history as school record holders.

Notably, Maslen L’Esperance exemplified exactly what it means to be a leader and a team captain. In the final race of the day for the greenies, L’Esperance was unsure if he could compete to the best of his abilities in the boys 3200m. Instead of just shying away from the race and heading home, he spun this situation into a positive.

Junior teammate Tripp de Laureal was also running the 3200m and hoping to set a personal record (PR). L’Esperance decided he would run the race with the intention of pacing his teammate through each lap so he could stay on target for the PR. After eight grueling laps, filled with grit and encouragement from the senior captain, sure enough, de Laureal set a new PR by eight seconds. Congratulations to the junior on the new PR and, let’s all give L’Esperance a round of applause for excellent captainship.

Finally, at a district meet in Joe Yenni Stadium last week, the JV Greenies’ underclassmen got another chance to prove why they are the future of the track & field program. Ally Davison, Catherine Johnson, Heidi Smith, Kai Oyemade, and Cyrus Arjmand all ran new PRs in the 400m, with Arjmand taking gold amongst the boys. Aaron Washington impressed in the long jump with a meet-winning jump on his second attempt. The 300m hurdles were dominated by Jada Recasner, setting a new PR (that she would beat three days later at the Rummel Relays) and taking gold.

Lacrosse

Newman Lacrosse had two very different games last week. The first game was against the two-time defending state champion Jesuit High School of New Orleans at Lupin Field on Wednesday. The crowd came, and definitely got their $5 worth (for non-Green N White Club members), and more. Both teams were ready to play and the match was physical from the start. The Greenies ended up on the short end of a 9-7 final score, but left no doubt they can play with the big boys. Move a couple of posts and who knows how a rematch could go.

Varsity Sports Now, March 28, 2025

Newman was led in scoring by Max Kukuy’s three goals and Eli Friend dominated his face-offs. Emeric Laborde added 13 saves in goal, and the defense led by Patrick Landry and the offense led by William Mahfouz stayed physical throughout. Let’s hope to see a rematch against the Blue Jays in the state finals.

On Friday, the team had a much easier time with C.E. Byrd High School from Shreveport, winning a game even more lopsided than the score of 23-1. The Greenies were led with six goals by Price DeMeyers, five more from Max Kukuy, and Christopher Connolly added four to the scoreboard. The young guns took advantage of their time to shine, with scores from Ezra Friend, Colin Farnsworth and Charlie Casbarian. Senior soccer star Charlie Guy also got in on the fun, with two goals of his own. Goalkeepers Laborde and senior Gus Wilson combined to allow just the one goal.

Newman returns to the field with away games at Archbishop Shaw High School and Holy Cross School this week. Go Greenies!

Golf

Last week, the boys golf team competed against Metairie Park Country Day at Lakewood Golf Club. Newman continued its winning ways beating the Cajuns team by 15 strokes. Newman’s final tally was 161 to Country Day’s 176. The team is now 4-0 on the season.

Senior Rowan Dravid had his best round of the year and took home Medalist Honors, finishing three over in the 9-hole match. Each week a different member of the team steps up to ensure the win, indicating all the members of the team have great potential.

The next boys and girls golf matches are today at 3:30pm at Audubon Golf Club against Metairie Park Country Day and Holy Cross School.
